Alexander McQueen, Metropolitan Museum of Art

Alexander McQueen, Metropolitan Museum of Art

Savage Beauty, a breathtaking exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art dedicated to Alexander McQueen, demonstrates curator Andrew Bolton’s ability to stage fashion in a very provocative way that fully expresses the various concepts developed by McQueen.  McQueen had this amazing sensibility to transform the grotesque into something extraordinarily aesthetically pleasing.  His daring vision and interpretation of different themes really shows this constant tension of opposing ideas to find the balance of broad strokes with meticulous details.  This can be seen in perfectly tailored dresses to the form of the human body while the materials evoke a tattered raw feel.  I absolutely admire McQueen’s innovative and mastery of different materials, ranging from balsa wood, metal, leather, feathers, fresh flowers, shells, and the list goes on.  One can definitely perceive McQueen’s obsession over life and death, creation and destruction, lightness and darkness, violence and sexuality, solemnity and playfulness, and power and vulnerability.  It is this great execution of celebratory casual precision that captivated me to his wildly exciting fashion collections.
